Apple Doughnut

Who can resist a freshly fried soft, fluffy doughnut? With this easy to make recipe, you can create variations of doughnuts – ring doughnuts, filled doughnuts or doughnut holes. Simply coat it with sugar or fill it with your favourite chocolate, Nutella or fruity jam to create a perfect delicious snack!

INGREDIENTS

PRE-PREPARATION

  1. Slice the apples and brown them in a pan with sugar and 40g butter.

PREPARE THE DOUGH

  1. Place the flour, sugar and salt in a bowl and mix.
  2. Add in the eggs, softened butter, warm milk and yeast.
  3. Knead till the dough is smooth and slightly elastic.
  4. Shape the dough into a ball and placed it in a bowl.
  5. Cover with a cloth and let it rest in a warm place for 60 minutes until the dough has doubled in volume.

SHAPING

  1. Roll the dough out with a rolling pin to around 4mm thick and cut out discs with a diameter of 7 to 8 cm. Please note that you will need an even number of discs.
  2. Put a slice of apple in the centre of one disc and cover the apple with another disc.
  3. Cover the dough with a cloth and let it rest at room temperature for 40 minutes.

BAKING

  1. Preheat the oil to 180˚C – 190˚C and fry each side of the donuts till golden brown.
  2. Place the fried doughnuts on a paper towel lined plate or baking sheet.
  3. Let the donuts cool and roll them in sugar to coat evenly if desired.

 

*If you’re filling the doughnuts with chocolate or fruit jam, shape the dough into little balls instead, leave to rest and pipe in the fillings once cooked.
